Who We Serve at Serenity House

Serenity House provides a compassionate, home-like alternative for hospice patients who are unable to remain in their own homes during the final stage of life. Our residence offers a peaceful and supportive environment where individuals can receive care with dignity, comfort, and respect.

Serenity House is a non-medical home that can serve up to five residents at a time. All residents must be under the care of a hospice agency, which provides professional medical, emotional, and spiritual support just as they would if the patient were receiving hospice care at home.

Those who come to Serenity House are often individuals who:

  • Do not have the financial resources to hire in-home care or afford nursing home placement

  • Have caregivers who are elderly, frail, or unable to provide 24-hour care

  • Have working caregivers who cannot remain home full-time

  • Have little or no family support available

To help cover basic household expenses, there is a minimal weekly fee of $150, which contributes toward food and utilities. Prior to admission, a sliding scale assessment based on income and liquid assets may adjust the weekly fee up to $1,050 per week. Fees may be reduced or waived for those who are indigent, ensuring that financial hardship does not prevent someone from receiving care.

Friends of Hospice / Serenity House proudly serves residents in Hamblen, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hawkins, Jefferson, Knox, and Sevier counties. Because the majority of our funding comes from Hamblen County, residents must live within a 30-mile radius of the home.

Since opening in 2011, Serenity House has had the honor of caring for nearly 750 residents, providing comfort, dignity, and compassionate support during life’s most meaningful moments.

ADMISSION PROCESS

  1. Hospice Enrollment
The patient must first be admitted to a hospice program, which will provide medical care and oversight.
  2. Referral Submission
The hospice agency submits a referral to Serenity House for consideration.
  3. Clinical Review
Upon receipt of the referral, Serenity House coordinates with the hospice agency to obtain the patient’s history and physical (H&P), along with the most recent physician and nursing notes.
  4. Eligibility Determination
Serenity House reviews all documentation to ensure the patient meets admission criteria.
  5. Family Consultation
If eligibility requirements are met, Serenity House contacts the patient’s family or responsible party to discuss financial arrangements and answer any questions.
  6. Care Coordination
Once all parties are in agreement, the hospice agency arranges transportation and orders all necessary medications and equipment.
  7. Pre-Admission Report
The hospice team provides a report to Serenity House prior to the patient’s arrival to ensure a smooth transition of care.
  8. Admission to Serenity House
The resident is welcomed into Serenity House. A family member or Power of Attorney accompanies the resident and meets with the Director to complete admission paperwork, finalize payment arrangements, and receive a tour of the home. During this time, staff assist the resident in transitioning comfortably into their room.
